Recycling Rates in England

Across England, recycling has become a growing concern for a number of regions, meaning that councils have been urged to dramatically improve their recycling rates. A number of households throughout the country have been doing their bit to improve their council’s recycling rate and help the environment, but some continue to lag behind, even declining in some areas.

Here, we list the top 10 councils in England for recycling rates, as well as noting the worst 10 who are lagging behind on their recycling rates. The different regions’ ratings are measured by the percentage of household waste that is recycled.

  • South Oxfordshire District Council (67.3%)
  • Vale of White Horse District Council (65.6%)
  • Rochford District Council (65.2%)
  • Surrey Heath Borough Council (63.3%)
  • Three Rivers District Council (63.2%)
  • Trafford MBC (61.9%)
  • Stockport MBC (60.7%)
  • Calderdale MBC (60.4%)
  • Stratford-on-Avon District Council (60.3%)

  • Westminster City Council (19.1%)
  • Newham (17.2%)
  • Lewisham (17.1%)
  • Council of the Isles of Scilly (14.1%)

These figures demonstrate just what a huge gap there is in efforts of some of the councils across the country. With the state of the environment being what it is, the urgency of improving recycling rates wherever possible is something which cannot be ignored, so perhaps a lesson can be taken from some of the councils that are performing well at recycling.
