What can you put in a skip by room

Here, we demonstrate room-by-room what is suitable for placing into your skip, and what is not, so that you don’t get into difficulty during your home clear-out project.

Living Room

  • Furniture - Wooden, plastic and metal furniture can all be placed in your skip.
  • Sofas - Sofas are classed as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). You will need to order a separate skip for all upholstered furniture such as sofas.
  • Batteries - These contain metals and chemicals which are hazardous and should not be placed in a skip.
  • TVs - These are classified as hazardous waste as they contain toxic chemicals such as lead and mercury.
  • Plasterboard - Do not place plasterboard and gypsum waste in your skip.

  • Fixtures - Usually made of ceramics, these can also go in your skip.
  • Tiles - Classes as inert waste, there's no problem putting these materials into a skip.
  • Medical Waste - Creates risk of infection and contamination.
  • Fluorescent Tubes - Contain mercury which is hazardous.

  • Gas Cooker - Gas appliances can safely be placed into skips.
  • Fittings - Wooden, metal and plastic fittings are safe to put in skips.
  • Electrical Appliances - These should be taken to WEEE recycling facilities instead.
  • Fridges/Freezers - These are also electrical goods which should be recycled at WEEE recycling facilities.

  • Carpet - Polyester carpets cannot be recycled so can be placed in your skip.
  • Mattress - These can be placed in your skip.
  • Light Bulbs - These are considered hazardous waste, so don’t place in your skip.
  • Electrical Goods - Electrical goods should all be sent to WEEE recycling facilities.

  • Wood - Wood planks are permitted within your hired skip.
  • Gas Cylinders - These are re-usable/refillable and should be returned to the local supplier or wherever the full cylinder was purchased from.
  • Vehicle Batteries - These are classified as hazardous waste so cannot be placed into a skip.
  • Tyres - Do not place these in your skip as they may be incorrectly disposed of.

  • Tree/Hedge trimmings - Green waste such as this can be placed safely into your skip.
  • Bricks - Place all unwanted, unused bricks in your skip for safe disposal.
  • Soil & Rubble - Skips are a popular choice for disposing of this kind of waste.
  • Chemicals & Pesticides - Hazardous waste such as these will not be collected if placed in your skip.
  • Creosote/CCA Treated Fence Panels - These pose health and environmental risks if not disposed of properly.
  • Telegraph Poles - They often contain hazardous materials and their size and weight can make them unsafe for skip disposal.
  • Railway Sleepers - Proper recycling methods should be followed for these materials.
