Do I need a permit for a skip?

If you wish for your skip to be placed on a public highway or road, you will require a permit from your local authority.

How do I apply for a skip permit?

Here at Brown Recycling, we can help advise you on the process of applying for a permit, and will even make the necessary applications to relevant local authorities to meet the Highways Act 1980 requirements. Remember it takes 3 days for local authorities to process these permits, so plan well in advance.

Is there a cost to obtain a permit?

Councils will charge a fixed fee to those obtaining a permit, anywhere between £30 and £50.

Do you have the required skip permits and licences?

We can arrange for the relevant permits and licences for your skip hire with the local authority upon request.

Do you offer a wait and load service?

Yes, we can offer this service whereby the driver will wait whilst you load the skip. However, if you cannot complete the loading within 30 minutes then there is a waiting time surcharge.

How do I arrange for my skip to be emptied/removed/exchanged?

Once you are ready for your skip to be collected, call our friendly team and we will arrange the collection.

How full can I load the skip?

Your skip should be filled no higher than the height of the sides, and should be level so that we can safely transport your waste to our recycling facility.

How long can I keep the skip for?

Skips can be kept for a maximum of 14 days, with the option to extend this period by paying a small weekly rental fee. For skips that will be kept on the road, the standard hire period for a highway permit is 14 days included in the permit cost; extension of highway permits will also be 14 days per permit extension.

How long does it take for the skip to be delivered?

We offer next day delivery in most cases, but in busy periods it can take up to 48 hours for a skip to become available, so customers are advised to order theirs 48 hours in advance to ensure they receive it on time.

How much notice do I need to give when ordering a skip?

When ordering a skip, you should give up to 72 hours for us to deliver the skip to you at your property if it is going on the highway, or 48 hours if on the driveway.

How much weight can be handled by each skip?
  • 3yd = 3 tonnes
  • 4yd = 4 tonnes
  • 8yd = 8 tonnes
  • 14yd = 8 tonnes
  • 20yd = 15 tonnes
  • 35yd = 15 tonnes

14yd chain lift and 35yd roll-on roll-off are for bulky waste. Maximum tonnage handled is based on the vehicle lifting the skip, not just the weight that the skip can hold. Our chain lift skip loader vehicle can lift up to 8 tonnes, and our roll-on roll-off vehicle can lift up to 15 tonnes.

Should the skip go on the road or on my drive?

The skip can be placed anywhere on your private property, such as your driveway, without requiring a permit, but we only recommend smaller, lighter skips such as the 3YD or 4YD to be placed on driveways as anything heavier such as 8YD skips containing soil or heavy waste may damage them. Should you wish for the skip to be placed on the road however, you will require a permit from your local authority. Please note that skips placed on your private property are done so at your own risk.

What can/can’t go in the skip?

Any waste can go into your skip, apart from the following: asbestos, fridges, freezers, microwaves, TVs/monitors, tyres, batteries, aerosols, part-filled paint tins, fluorescent tubes, hazardous packaging, plasterboard, creosote, railway sleepers, telegraph poles, upholstered furniture (POPs) and tyres. We can arrange separate disposal for these. Please contact us to discuss.
