How Should I Dispose of a Fridge?

When it comes to disposing of a fridge at your property, there are various things to consider to ensure you are doing it correctly and in an environmentally friendly manner. Unlike household furniture, other installations or smaller belongings, fridges cannot simply be placed into a skip.

You can be fined up to £2,500 for illegal fly tipping

The reason behind this need for specialist disposal is that some components of fridges can be extremely harmful to the environment, and thus cannot simply be thrown away. Indeed since January 2002, all ozone-depleting substances (ODS) must in fact be removed from fridges before they can be recycled or thrown away. Should anyone ignore this rule, or fly tip their fridge to get rid of it, they can be prosecuted and fined up to £2,500.

Here, we discuss the possible ways in which you can safely dispose of your fridge.

Recycling Centres

You can find out the whys and wherefores of disposing of your fridge yourself from your local authority or council. Armed with the relevant, correct and up-to-date advice and regulations, you will be able to dispose of the fridge yourself.

You should take the fridge to a designated hazardous waste recycling site, which should not incur any cost. Do make sure, though, that you are taking it to a site where fridges can be disposed of, as not all waste recycling sites are suitable for this.

Arrange a Collection

Some companies provide collection and disposal services for fridges that are no longer needed within their current premises or that are no longer functional. Companies providing such a service could include local furniture recycling firms or simply waste removal companies. This service is one that takes all the legwork away from anyone in this position with an unwanted fridge, at a reasonable cost.

On top of this, if you are in the process of buying a new fridge and having it delivered to you, the retailer may agree to dispose of your old fridge for you, thus taking all the legwork away from you – even the arrangements for its collection by a waste management company!
