New Legislation: Single-use plastic item ban in England

New Legislation: Single-use plastic item ban in England

Plastic bottles recycling

What is the new legislation?

As of 1st October 2023, businesses may no longer supply, sell, or offer certain single-use plastic items in England.

The items impacted by the new legislation include:

  • Plastic plates, bowls, and trays
  • Plastic cutlery and balloon sticks
  • Polystyrene food and drink containers

The ban applies to both online and over-the-counter sales and covers all types of single-use plastic, including biodegradable, compostable, and recycled materials.

What do I have to do as a business?

If you’re a business that’s impacted by this change, you need to make sure that you responsibly recycle any remaining stock. You will also need to start hunting for the best quality alternatives to single-use plastic products, such as eco-friendly, compostable variants.

Are there any exemptions?

There are some exemptions in specific circumstances. To find out more, visit this specific area of the Gov.uk website here.

What do I do with any single-use plastic waste now the ban is in place?

You can still dispose of single-use plastic waste by recycling it as you normally have.

For any larger volumes of the banned items or stock that need to be disposed of, we have a range of different collection options. If you are in the Staffordshire or South Cheshire area, contact our customer support team on 01782 816 520 or email [email protected], we would be happy to discuss your requirements.
