Simpler Recycling Rules 2025: What You Need To Know

In an effort to improve recycling rates and streamline waste management in the UK, this year the government will be introducing new mandatory separation regulations. The Simpler Recycling initiative aims to standardise waste separation practices for both businesses and homeowners, providing a more sustainable system.

This month at Brown Recycling, we want to help you understand these changes with our comprehensive guide.

What are the mandatory waste separation rules coming in March 2025?

DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) has introduced rules effective from the 31st of March 2025 for England which require businesses and all non-domestic premises (excluding micro-firms who have fewer than 10 full-time employees to:

  • Separate core recyclable materials, including plastic, metal, glass, paper and cardboard from all other waste streams.
  • Implement food waste separation, segregating any food waste generated from other waste types for collection.
  • Keep non-recyclable waste separate from any recyclable or food waste to avoid contamination.

The timeline

  • 31st of March 2025 – From this date, businesses and non-domestic premises must comply with new waste separation regulations.
  • 31st of March 2026 – From the same date next year, local authorities in England will have to provide core recycling for households, as well as food waste recycling collections.
  • 31st of March 2027 – From the same date in 2027, all businesses, including micro-firms with less than 10 full-time equivalent employees, will need to comply with the new waste separation regulations. Plastic film and packaging will also become part of the plastic waste stream.

What does the Simpler Recycling legislation say?

The Simpler Recycling reforms have been created to standardise practices across England.

The key objectives of the legislation include:

  • reducing contamination of recyclable materials
  • increasing the overall recycling rates
  • driving towards the net-zero commitments made by the government

The legislation is designed to ensure all businesses and local authorities follow the same set of rules.

How to comply with the rules

If you’re a business with 10 or more FTEs, here are some steps to help you comply with the new rules from 31st March 2025:

  1. Assess your waste production to identify the waste types you have, their volume and whether you currently have appropriate segregation methods.
  2. Implement segregation systems with clearly labelled bins for the different streams of waste.
  3. Arrange for collection with a trusted waste management company that understands the new regulations and can provide reliable collection of each waste stream for recycling and processing.
  4. Educate your staff through training and activities that reinforce good waste segregation — it’s important they understand the need for compliance and efficiency.

What does Simpler Recycling mean for your business?

Simpler Recycling 2025 represents a number of changes for your business, including some initial operational adjustments. This may require your business to modify waste management processes and create space for multiple waste bins to aid in segregating the different materials.

While it could represent an initial investment in infrastructure and training, the long-term benefits should lead to more efficient and environmentally friendly waste management practices for your business. This could help optimise your practices and save on costs.

Tips to prepare your business

In order to prepare effectively for the upcoming changes, we recommend that you:

  • Conduct a waste audit for your business
  • Invest in the appropriate infrastructure (bins, containers, etc.)
  • Establish a waste management policy with guidelines on segregation and disposal
  • Engage with waste management professionals to ensure you have a system in place
