Hazardous Waste FAQs
What types of hazardous waste do you deal with?

Brown Recycling can handle and manage any type of hazardous waste enquiries including asbestos, fluorescent tubes, printer cartridges, lead acid batteries, waste oil, aerosols, tyres, fridges, and more!

Who is responsible for hazardous waste removal?

Businesses have a legal responsibility (duty of care) to produce, store, transport, and dispose of waste without harming the environment. Brown Recycling organises transportation and documentation, but you must arrange the service.

How long can I keep hazardous waste on my premises?

It is recommended that you have hazardous waste collected and removed as quickly as possible, avoiding storing it on your premises. Contact us to arrange for collection of your hazardous waste or to discuss regular, planned collections if required.

What hazardous materials can’t go in the skip?

There are some materials which cannot be placed into the skip, which include:

  • Oil and petrol
  • Asbestos
  • Printing inks
  • Liquid and clinical waste
  • Gas bottles
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • White goods and refrigerators
  • Solvents
  • Televisions and computer screens
  • Creosote
  • Tyres
How should I store hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste must be stored in secure, labelled containers in a weatherproof area and separate from other waste streams to prevent leaks or contamination. If unsure, get in touch with our team and we will be able to advise accordingly.

How is hazardous waste disposed of?

Only licensed waste carriers can dispose of hazardous waste. It’s collected separately and processed at approved facilities.

Do I need to have asbestos removed professionally?

Asbestos is extremely dangerous and has to be removed carefully by a properly trained specialist. Never try to deal with asbestos yourself.

What regulations do I need to comply with?

The Hazardous Waste Regulations (2005) for England and Wales governs storage, transport and segregation of hazardous waste, plus the requirement of consignment notes.

Do you carry out site surveys before work begins?

Yes. Brown Recycling will always conduct thorough surveys and testing, followed by a full report.

Is the asbestos removed and taken away all in one trip?

No. Asbestos is first removed and secured in a container by a trained professional then collected and disposed of in a separate trip by us.

What is a consignment note?

When hazardous waste is moved it must be accompanied by correctly completed paperwork called a consignment note. A consignment note is proof that a registered and licensed waste carrier has removed the waste, and passed this on to be correctly disposed of.

What is classed as hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste is any material harmful to humans or the environment, including substances dangerous to touch, ingest, or inhale. It must be kept separate and handled compliantly.
