Plastic Recycling FAQs
What plastic waste do you accept?

Plastics which we can recycle include:

  • LDPE Film – Low Density Polyethylene, e.g. Shrink Wrap
  • HDPE – High Density Polyethylene, e.g. Wheelie Bins, Bakery Crates
  • PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride, e.g. Window Frames
  • PP – Polypropylene, e.g. Hessian Sacks/Bulk Bags.
What is the process of plastic recycling?

The plastic is collected and sorted into different materials before going through reprocessing. Depending on the plastic form, the stages of processing generally involve shredding, washing, further shredding (grinding) or melting and extrusion to form pellets.

Is it important for plastic waste to be clean?

Although we prefer plastic waste to be clean and empty, we are open to accepting contaminated items, such as those that are wet, dirty or have any residue. However, these items would receive a lower rebate value.

Can I make money from plastic recycling?

Yes! Plastics are valuable materials which can be repurposed into new products. Plastic recycling offers some of the highest rebates within waste management. There are many different types of plastic, and each type can be available in different forms and colours. It is essential to know what the plastic you have is and the best way to prepare it to redeem the greatest value.

What are the seven types of plastic?

The seven types of plastic are polyethylene terephthalate (PET), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) plus other plastics that don’t fall into the previous six categories.

Is it true that most plastics are not recyclable?

This is not true. Many plastics can be recycled, although some cannot. However, over time, even recyclable plastics can degrade, which means the quality deteriorates. This means it can be recycled a handful of times before it is no longer sustainable to do so.

Will I receive a certificate of destruction?

Yes, at Brown Recycling, we will provide a Certificate of Destruction as a record of your plastic being securely and responsibly processed upon request. This gives you proof of compliance with regulations as a business.
